Paragliding Operations: Risk Management and Insurance Guide
Risk management, pilot certificates, equipment maintenance schedules, and insurance types for paragliding operations.
By Mert Aydın · · 8 min read
The industry is rapidly professionalizing in tandem paragliding. In hubs like Babadağ, Pamukkale, and Aksaz, competition is high, but businesses that do not manage risks cannot survive long-term.
Pilot and Staff Certificates
- Tandem pilot license from THK or FAI equivalent.
- Mandatory annual medical check-up.
- Up-to-date first aid certificate for at least one staff member.
- Radio operator license.
Equipment Maintenance Schedule
- Wing must undergo authorized testing every 12 months or 100 hours (whichever comes first).
- Harnesses visually inspected after every flight.
- Carabiners replaced every 3 years.
- Reserve parachute inspected every 6 months.
Weather Condition Decision Matrix
Write down your operational decision matrix including wind speed, direction, turbulence, and humidity. If in doubt, don't fly. One accident can ruin the season.
Insurance Types
- Third-party liability: Covers counter-party expenses in case of passenger injury.
- Pilot personal accident: For the pilot.
- Passenger personal accident: For the customer; also perceived as a gift.
- Equipment insurance: For wings and gear.
Customer Waiver Form
A signed (or digital) waiver form is mandatory before every flight. Age, health declaration, weight, authorization from a legal guardian (for those under 18). With Smartur digital tickets, this form is signed via QR, paperless.
Sıkça Sorulan Sorular
- Does rain/fog affect insurance?
- Insurance policies have an exclusion for "flights in insufficient weather conditions." Systematically operating a decision matrix lowers premiums.
- What if a passenger's declaration turns out to be false?
- When a waiver form is written and signed, it largely protects the business. Digital signatures are valid.
